Family Bucket List During COVID - Holiday Edition

By Helen Bryant, Publisher - Macaroni Kid Louisville Central and Louisville SW December 13, 2020

2020 has been an interesting year that I think everyone is ready to forget.  From NTI (non-traditional learning - homeschooling), to cancelling of many sports and actvities, quarantine, limited travel there are some silver linings in this.

This Holiday Season I created a bucket list of  items I wanted to do with my boys to make memories at home.  Some are the traditional things you think of during the holiday while others are something that are new to us and something we learned or decided to start doing because of COVID and is our silver lining.

1.  Holiday Baking - from Christmas cookies to making holiday treats for your fur babies. This is something our family does each year and you can make extra and drop them off on the porch of your neighbors, those that are shut-in and need a lift of cheer and still be socially distant.

2. Local Sightseeing for holiday lights around town.  Again this is another one of our favorites because there are several location you can see for FREE or you can take the time and attend some of the area drive-thru and walk thru light shows around town.

3.  Holiday cards - this is something we do every year to friends and family,  but I have taken it a step further and found a group that send cards via snail mail!  It is a wonderful blessing to get mail from strangers who just enjoy spreading joy.  You can do this with your kiddos and make cards and take them to your local senior center and adult care facilities.

4. Weekly Holiday Movie Nights - there are so many Holiday options now and depending on the age of your kiddos there is bound to be an amazing Holiday movie out there for your family.

5.  HandMade Holidays - this is new for my kiddos.  I have always been crafty and loved making HandMade gifts and cards.  This Christmas my youngest asked me to make him a handmade crotchet blanket as one of his Christmas gifts.  This then lead the boys to making beautiful handmade gift for other family member.  From ceramic trays, personalized ornaments, photos frames and other artwork worthy of a gallery.  These gifts become personal, with meaning and about the same price as if you were to purchase a gift.

6. Hot Chocolate Charcuterie Board - create a fun afternoon event with all the hot chocolate trimmings of peppermint, marshmallows, mini cookies, mini chocolates and what ever you want to add!
