Spring Activity Bucket List

Fun, Family Activities Do Not Need to Cost A Fortune Around Central Louisville

By Helen Bryant - Publisher, Macaroni Kid Louisville Central & Louisville SW April 7, 2019

We live in such an amazing city because there are so many free or low-cost activities year-round that families can attend.  But if your schedule is tight and you can't make the scheduled community events, here is a great list of 10 activities you can do with your family around Louisville Central and on your own schedule this spring!

  1. Attend an outdoor (or indoor) concert or play performance.  There are a number of venues that have a FREE family concert or play throughout the year such as the Kentucky Shakespeare Park Tour,   Louisville Nature Center, the various Metro Parks, the local libraries, as well as the Waterfront.  Check our the Macaroni Kid Louisville Central calendar for times, dates and locations.
  2. Read a book or attend storytime with your kids.  This provides quality time as a family, but there is also no cost when you borrow the books from your local library.  Are you kids reading on there own?  Create a family book club, but instead of everyone reading the same book, each person reads a different book. Then set a family book review time to take a moment to find out what books they are reading and why they are enjoying the story.
  3.  Host a game night as a family or with friends.  Family games can be as inexpensive as a deck of card, a dice games, to a game of spoons,  to a friendly competition on your gaming devices.  Interacting and spending time together is what matters.
  4. As the spring season progresses and the weather becomes warmer, plant a garden together.  You do not need to have a plot of land in your yard, start small with some fresh herbs, such as sweet basil,  in a window or deck planter. Then once these are ready to harvest in the summer months, use the basil in a Caprese salad or make homemade pesto.  You and your kids will learn a lot together about gardening and will have a chance to enjoy the results of your hard work.
  5. Have a garage sale.  Each year it seems like I have more and more stuff accumulating in my home.  Take the time with your kids and pull the clothes, toys, and books that are in good condition and sell them.  This will teach your kids about money, if they get rid of a lot of toys you can reward them with 1 new toy or book for their hard work.  You will end up with a less clutter home and extra money for more family activities.
  6. Play in the rain with your kiddos.  As simple as this sounds, this is one of my best spring memories as a child.  Depending on the temperature, take the time to splash in the puddles and get dirty. Remember -- April showers bring May flowers!
  7. Go fly a kite.  Louisville has so many parks where you can go enjoy this past time.   Not sure where to go, check out our Macaroni Kid Louisville Central park guide to see what amenities are available and which park is closest to you.
  8. Visit the animals at the Louisville Zoo, Blackacre Nature Conservancy or another retail venue such as Feeders Supply or Purrfect Day Cafe and get your animal fix.
  9. Throw a ball around outside.  Have a game of kickball, stickball, baseball, basketball, soccer or what every game you want to make up.  Not enough room in your yard, take the time and head over to your local park for more space. Need an indoor sport with a ball?  Try bowling!  Starting on May 20th - Kids can BOWL FREE spring and summer long!
  10. Still not sure what activities to do or add to your bucket list head over to the Macaroni Kid Lousiville Central calendar and see if there are activities that you can add to your Spring bucket list of family activities this year!
